I've recently had the same issue as well, on Windows 10 64 bits, what could be the reason?

Sounds like a GPO might be not allowing the driver to be installed on demand when selected from the directory. I would suggest running a gpresult report on an endpoint experiencing this issue. I would look for anything referencing "Package Point and Click"

I had to do some tweaking in group policy to address some oddities with win10 clients printing on a 2012r2 print server.
